2016 was the year that I finally became a counselor. Never mind that I started coursework in 2014, January 12 marked the first time that I sat with a real client and attempted the voodoo that I want to do professionally. As I reach the end of required course work, I switched over to an internship at a local high school, where I work with the student-athletes both one-on-one and in groups, as well as provide consultation in team practices and games. Their reception has been warm, if not a bit unimpressed by the fact that other than, like the IMG Academy, they are likely the only high school in the country with a sport psychologist on staff. For my part, it’s heartening to finally be doing the thing and find that I like it and seem to be good at it – and disheartening to realize that an important part of my career is going to be waiting for old, white guys (coaches), who don’t think that mental health is impactful, to die.
Still, as defining as that January 12 moment will likely prove for the next three or four decades, the moment that most defined my calendar year occurred on January 1. During an incredibly easy run on New Years Day, I suffered a somewhat-indeterminate injury that helped me meet my insurance deductible on January 2 and had me in and out of a medical boot 5 times between January 2 and the end of September. So at the same time as I was treating my new clients, I was treating myself: “sport psychologist, heal thyself!” Not only did the injury pretty much prohibit running for 9 straight months, it also canceled my planned summer trip to Israel and Jordan. When you can’t run, you walk, and when you can’t walk, you drive: Mom and I pivoted and instead headed west on Part 2 of our Best of the West tour (kelziebeebe.blogspot .com/search/label/Best%20Of%20The%20West for pics and details). Two summers ago, we visited the National Parks of the American Southwest; this summer we saw the National Parks of the Pacific Northwest and some of Canada. 7,249 miles (or 13,882 miles combined) later, we had seen…a lot, mostly picturesque piles of rocks.
Aside from the two main themes of mental and physical health, my 2016 was largely spent looking forward to future developments. I applied to a full complement of Ph.D. programs in counseling psychology – IU, Ball State, Mizzou, University of North Texas, Texas Tech, Iowa, Tennessee, WVU, Springfield College, and the University of Denver – and will spend January and February 2017 traveling to interview at those schools that express interest in my application. I will start my Ph.D. program in Fall 2017.
I finally found a situation in which I can play hockey and not get pounded to total mush - and honestly, I have kept an eye on which Ph.D. locations could provide me a more fertile education in this pursuit as well. I had five rabbit-inmates live in my guest room as fosters at various points throughout the year. In the photo you can see Boo, an unrepentant biter whose ears are so long they drag on the ground. She is now an only occasional nibbler and bonded with a bunny husband who she totally dominates.

My only goal going in to 2017 was to be free of the injury I had picked up exactly one year earlier – Fairly low expectations! – and I seem to have pulled it off. Only onwards and upwards, faster and farther from here! I imagine that 2017 will usher in unprecedented turbulence, especially considering that right now I have zero idea where I will be living on January 1, 2018. As long as I get to navigate it with two roughly-regularly working feet, it will be considered progress.
 Have a great 2017!

MARNIE and RICK
After our celebrations of Christmas, including R’s sister Nancy, and New Years, M and R went on a “heat seeking tour” – wandering to Santa Fe, Tucson (where we found heat), across to San Diego, Hollywood and north to Capenteria, San Francisco to see our Nepalese friends, and to northern CA to explore Ferndale and the Redwoods. Our return trip took us past many wind and solar farms, on long, desolate stretches of America’s interstates, and within sight of many of our country’s dying small towns. In Tulsa we visited the Peers, grad school friends whom we haven’t seen for a few years (none of us has changed an iota). Once home we were not ready to settle-so we joined a Hurtigruten mail boat tour of the Norwegian coast from Bergen to Kirkenes roundtrip 3/16-29 (billed as Over the Roof of Norway). The beautiful winter scenery and Norwegian coastline, coupled with sightseeing trips and day walks, made for a relaxing and informative trip through an area we first explored by motorcycle in 2005 and 2012. We met many Brits who were facing the Brexit vote, which dovetailed with discussion of our upcoming Presidential election. We suggested the Brits should not exit the EU and Trump would never be elected – what terrible predictions! We then took the train over the interior of Norway and past numerous ski destinations to visit Stockholm and then fly to Lisbon, Portugal for a week-long road trip through of one of our favorite countries – with stops in Piodao, Tourem, and Marvoa. (See details on beebelog. blogspot.com - April).
Back home, we did Spring garden work until 4/15 when R rode and M drove to Bloomington to visit K and attend Little 5 at IU. M stayed in Bloomington for a week, enjoying time with K, working out daily at the SRSC, visiting friends and attending an IU School of Education faculty/alumni dinner. R departed by bike for Charleston SC to visit for several days with our friends, Lin and Al Sturdevant. Al had just undergone a bone marrow transplant.
Back on the road, R headed west across GA, AL, AR, TX, NM, & AZ to CA. In the high country of NM and AZ he encountered snow and freezing temperatures before hitting the warmth of the Mohave Desert and Bakersfield. Here he explored the Kern River Oil Fields (look closely on Google maps) where the oil was discovered in the 1890’s at less than 90 feet below the surface, so the developed pumpers are almost touching each other and the piping is above ground. The weather precluded a visit to Death Valley and crossing Indian county to Santa Fe as the elevations still were in winter mode. Coming back the same way, he turned north at Tucumcari to Kansas City. Somewhere along the return trip and in the cold he injured his left knee, which was without cartilage due to arthritis, and damaged the meniscus. Back home, the extreme injury pain was moderated by cortisone, but inability to ambulate indicated the need for a new knee, scheduled for 9.8.
R, in a knee brace, and with his brother, Paul, took several summer trips: to the WY Big Horns; northern lower MI along Lakes Michigan and Huron; and to Ely MN for special pastries from the Plum Bun bakery on the way to the headwaters of the Mississippi. R finished the season with 5k less than 400000 total miles for life.
At last Rick got to see the Halifax Tattoo again, after his first time in 2000! Late June R and M drove through Canada to Halifax to visit Carol Hill and attend the marvelous Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo on Canada Day. We toured the beautiful and historic Halifax area with our guide Carol and enjoyed a leisurely visit before making the return trip in 2 x 1000 mile days.
M and Kelzie went on their second “Thelma and Louise” (aka, Best of the West) tour from 7.9-29 thru the Northwestern and Canadian national parks (they did the Southwest with car top down 2 summers ago)(see beebelog.blogspot.com for log and details) – MN, SD, MT, WY, ID, British Columbia, WA, OR, UT, CO, NE, IA & WI. Meanwhile R did the yard and “women’s work” and had to contend with a major flood and hale storm that caused damage across Madison.
In August Alex came from IN to live with us in order to achieve WI residency prior to enrolling at UW, Fall 2017. He was with us through the holidays and has decided to move back to Indiana to attend IU next fall.
In September, just prior to Rick’s knee replacement surgery, our South African friends Gary and Diane visited on their extensive tour of the Americas. We have visited their home twice and were glad to have the opportunity to show them Wisconsin in return.
Sept took Nook back to Bloomington and school where she started to play rec hockey, and continued teaching open water swimming for triathletes, whispering to the rabbits at the animal shelter, and her fall semester Internship at a local high school. R had surgery and a long uncomfortable rehab as agonizing pain lingered for 58 days in spite of all the pre-op exercise and prevented him from attending his 50th college reunion. M was a nursemaid in addition to all her other “women’s work”. She also joined a book club, which is a refreshing activity for her. We had a beautiful, long fall until in one week the temps dropped and snow weather set in. With Kelzie here, we celebrated Thanksgiving with friends, this year enjoying the extensive holiday buffet in a restored 1857 grain mill followed by fireside socialization and trivia at Normanda’s. This traditional gathering predates 1993.
Again from afar, we have watched IU football and basketball through ups and downs and recently a coaching change in FB. A bowl game has a way of drawing our interest and we are hopeful of a good showing in the Big 10 Tournament. R rang for the Salvation Army and got a sever cold after each stint.
The Christmas holiday was spent at home with the old folks coughing and sniffling and Kelzie/Alex computing, studying, reading, working, and spending time with friends. We missed having sister Nancy with us this year, as she was enjoying a Vermont Christmas with her children.
We have maintained our surgery rehab sessions, daily gym workouts, and sessions with our trainers and feel better for having done so. We endeavored to end the year on a positive note, ringing in the New Year with friends and family and each going our separate ways for new and exciting experiences in 2017.
